How often should a member magazine publish? Pick a schedule you can survive
2 min read
When you start, there's a pull toward ambition: "Let's do it monthly." Three issues in, you're writing the editor's letter at midnight.
A schedule you keep beats a schedule you announce.
The options
| Frequency | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | A larger team, news-driven content, a big advertising programme | Burnout, thin issues |
| Bi-monthly | Medium teams with regular content | Six deadlines a year is still a lot |
| Quarterly | Most small associations | Content can age between issues |
| Twice a year | Very small teams or highly specialised audiences | Members may forget it exists |
| Annual | A showcase or review issue | Needs another channel between issues |
Questions to answer
- How many hours can you give each issue? Be realistic and include chasing and proofing.
- How much content do you have? Twelve issues need roughly three times what four do.
- How fast does your field change? Fast-moving news needs a newsletter or website alongside.
- What do advertisers expect? Many prefer quarterly with a longer shelf life.
- What do members want? Ask.
The mix that works
A quarterly magazine with a monthly email gives most associations what they need:
- The magazine carries features, profiles and depth.
- The email carries news, dates and links.
Each covers a different job and neither has to do everything.
Pick fixed dates
Choose the publication dates for the year and put them in a calendar visible to the team. March, June, September and December is easy to remember. Members learn to expect it.
Plan a buffer
Draft the next issue's feature before the current one is out. A queue of finished pieces makes a deadline easier.
If you fall behind
Don't skip an issue silently. Publish a shorter one, tell members what happened and keep the cadence. A shorter issue on time is better than a long one that never comes.
Review after a year
Look at your reader numbers, the workload and the money. Adjust one thing at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Is quarterly right for most associations?
Often, yes. It gives enough time to produce good content and enough frequency to stay in members' minds.
Can I publish less often and add a newsletter?
Yes. A magazine two or four times a year with a short monthly newsletter is a common pattern.
What happens if I miss a deadline?
Publish late rather than skipping an issue, and tell members when to expect it. Regularity matters more than the exact day.
Should I change frequency later?
You can. Announce it, and try the new rhythm for at least a year.
